Beautiful Chaos by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (REVIEW)

Beautiful Chaos (Caster Chronicles #3) by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Genre: YA Supernatural - Publisher: Little Brown - Publication Date: October 18, 2011 - Format: Hardcover - Pages: 528 - Source: Purchased

Ethan Wate thought he was getting used to the strange, impossible events happening in Gatlin, his small Southern town. But now that Ethan and Lena have returned home, strange and impossible have taken on new meanings. Swarms of locusts, record-breaking heat, and devastating storms ravage Gatlin as Ethan and Lena struggle to understand the impact of Lena's Claiming. Even Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals is affected - and their abilities begin to dangerously misfire. As time passes, one question becomes clear: What - or who - will need to be sacrificed to save Gatlin?
For Ethan, the chaos is a frightening but welcome distraction. He's being haunted in his dreams again, but this time it isn't by Lena - and whatever is haunting him is following him out of his dreams and into his everyday life. Even worse, Ethan is gradually losing pieces of himself - forgetting names, phone numbers, even memories. He doesn't know why, and most days he's too afraid to ask.
Sometimes there isn't just one answer or one choice. Sometimes there's no going back. And this time there won't be a happy ending. (Goodreads.com)

Oh. My. Gosh. This book...Definitely worth the squee it received when I bought it, and definitely deserving of the Book of the Month title here at BookBreather. You know how sometimes you read a book that you know you're going to love and it ends up surpassing your expectations? Or how sometimes you read a book and you hope that it's going to be as good as the other books in the series and it ends up being better than all of them combined? Or how sometimes you read a book and you know that you could talk hours about it, fill up dozens of pages of words about it, but never properly express how amazing the content is?

Say hello to Beautiful Chaos. The third book in the Caster Chronicles was everything I hoped it would be and more. Infused with a little (and sometimes a lot) of everything I could ever ask for in a book. An original supernatural book with chill and romance and heartbreak and death and doom and friendship and family and sacrifices and mystery and marvelous, incredible, gorgeous, enticing, BEAUTIFUL chaos.

As usual, Garcia and Stohl create the most vivid scenes and world with their descriptions. When I read this book, I felt like I was picked up by a giant hand and placed in the broken town of Gatlin. Sometimes, I would look up and wonder for a minute where I was, then remember that I was only facing the cold from the ceiling fan I was too lazy to turn off, rather than the End of Days. They also created great emotion. Better than ever. I felt some sort of connection to each and every one of the characters, with the exception of John Breed who, despite everything, I still don't like.

But the rest of the characters are great. They have depth and distinct personalities, goals, desires. I am still struggling to decide which one is my favorite, because they are all so great. Ethan has a strong voice and a kind heart. If he was real, I'd want him as my boyfriend. Link is hilarious and always good for a laugh, no matter what is happening, as are the Sisters. Amma is tough and sharp, but in this book we get to see a side of her that is vulnerable and broken, just like the rest of the town. Lena infuriates me, but I still love her. Macon is awesome. Liv is sweet and smart and a lot tougher than she seems. Each of the characters have experienced major change and growth. The world may be beautifully written, but I think it is the characters that truly make the story.

I loved learning more about Sarafine. I loved seeing her struggling with the darkness, and discovering what made her into the vindictive beyotch she became. I also loved learning more about John Breed and Link's capabilities. Especially Link. Linkubus. Definitely makes me want to buy Dream Dark, which is the novella about Link. I also liked how this book carried more doom than the others. More doom and action and suspense and tension. Ethan is actually the one experiencing most of the bad things, putting all the pieces together, and falling apart.

The ending literally rendered me speechless - and bawling. It was shocking and heartbreaking and left me aching for the next book. Sure, there was one heck of a cliffhanger, but, my gosh, it was great. All in all, this is definitely on my top 10 books of 2011, probably even top 5. It was great. Amazing. Extremely close to perfect. It made me laugh, cry, gasp, and literally go, "Whaaaat!? What? What? Whaaaat!?!?!?" I loved everything about it. I don't want to wait over a year for the next one.

I don't care what other books you've read. If you haven't read Beautiful Chaos, do it now.

Beautiful Chaos quotes

Hello, everyone! As you may know, my book of the month is Beautiful Chaos by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

I haven't read the entire thing yet, but let's just say that this book is absolutely fabulous. No doubt the best in the series so far. I should be posting my review sometime soon. And, with great books come great quotes. I thought I'd share with you guys my favorite quotes from the book so far.

WARNING: THESE CONTAIN SLIGHT SPOILERS.

"I had always hoped things would change in my town, until they started changing. Now I wanted Gatlin to go back to the boring town I'd known all my life. The way things were when I hated the way things were. Back when I could see things coming, and nothing ever came." (Pg. 139)

"That was the smell - food that wasn't food. For these lives that weren't lives." (Pg. 165)

"'Yeah, she's hot, all right.' He noticed me starng at him like he was nuts. 'What? I can't call it like I see it?'
'Sarafine's the Queen of Darkness, dumbass.'
'Seen a movie lately? The Queen a Darkness is always totally hot. Third Degree Burns.'" (Pg. 191)

"I started to panic and noticed the punch table, a good fifteen feet away. That seemed like a safe distance. 'I'm going to get something to eat. Anybody want anything?'
'Nope.' Liv smiled at me like everything was fine.
'Not a thing.' Lena smiled at me like she wanted to kill me.
I escaped as quickly as I could." (Pg. 271 - 272)

"But I could hear the desperation in Link's voice. 'It's never been anyone but you.'
'What are you talking about?' She froze, but it was too late.
Link couldn't stop himself. 'Sometimes I think crazy things, like I want to be with you forever. We could live in an RV and see the world. I mean, the parts you can drive to. And you could write songs, and I could play them at gigs. Can't you see it?'" (Pg. 273 - 274 This is my favorite quote in the entire series. I cry everytime I read it. I'd travel the world with you, Linkubus.)

"Time to grow a pair of kneecaps." (Pg. 310)

"Turns out The Crucible is more about bitches than witches, as Lena would be the first to say. I was glad I waited until the end of the unit to finish reading the play. It made me hate half of Jackson Hgh, and the whole cheer squad, even more than usual." (Pg. 312)

"The afflicted girls were on one side - led by Emily Asher. Apparently, their job was to act like phonies and pretend they were possessed. Emily was a natural. They all were." (Pg. 313)

"She smiled, and I knew I would always remember this day. Like the day I found her crying in the garden at Greenbrier. There were times when I looked at her and everything stopped. When the world fell away and I knew nothing could ever come between us." (Pg. 331)

"'Dude, why does it always have to be graveyards and crypts with you? Can't we hang out somewhere that isn't full a dead bodies?'" (Pg. 363)

"'Don't be mad.' There was no guy in the world who didn't know what those words meant. She was about to give me a reason to be mad.
'I won't.' My stomach curled into a ball.
'You have to promise.' Even worse." (Pg. 383)

"He seemed more concerned about Liv than Marian, which didn't surprise me, but it still made me angry. Like just about everything that came out of his mouth." (Pg. 413)

So, there are some of my favorites. Honestly, the book is full of awesome. Everything Link says is worthy of going into this post, but I only put the majorly great ones. If you are hesitant to pick up Beautiful Chaos, don't be!

Crave by Melissa Darnell (ARC REVIEW)

Crave (The Clann #1) by Melissa Darnell
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance - Publisher: Harlequin Teen - Publication Date: October 25, 2011 - Format: eARC - Pages: 416 - Source: NetGalley

Savannah Colbert has never known why she's so hated by the kids of the Clann. Nor can she deny her instinct to get close to Clann golden boy Tristan Coleman. Especially when she recovers from a strange illness and the attraction becomes nearly irresistible. It's as if he's a magnet, pulling her gaze, her thoughts, even her dreams. Her family has warned her to have nothing to do with him, or any members of the Clann. But when Tristan is suddenly everywhere she goes, Savannah fears she's destined to fail.
For years, Tristan has been forbidden to even speak to Savannah Colbert. Then Savannah disappears from school for a week and comes back…different, and suddenly he can't stay away. Boys seem intoxicated just from looking at her. His own family becomes stricter than ever. And Tristan has to fight his own urge to protect her, to be near her no matter the consequences….(Goodreads.com)

I should love this book. It has everything I look for in a book: Awesome paranormalness, enticing writing, and a lucious romance. But for some reason, I didn't love it. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it, either.

The writing was gorgeous. Darnell knows how to paint a beautiful picture inside of a person's mind. She is also very skilled at creating emotions that make you smile and tear you to peices again and again and again. I wasn't really a big fan of the alternating perspectives between Savannah and Tristan. But then again, I've always felt like switching points of view is a very challenging thing to pull off. Still, I felt very connected to both of the narrators and they each had a very strong, compelling voice.

I'm not sure about the plot, though. The novel was very slow. Lots of romance, little plot. I kept having to take breaks from reading this. I felt that there were a lot of unnecessary scenes and that the length of this book could have been cut in half. I also found that some of the events were corny and unbelievable, and in the beginning the romance was highly artificial. There were no plot twists and I found the story to be quite predictable. Once the plot did pick up towards the end, though, I thought it was pretty neat and it left a lot of great possibilities for the sequel.

The characters are well-written, just not exactly memorable. I liked them, but I didn't love them. Savannah had a ton of great attributes. She was strong and caring and determined, but she was also whiny, and made foolish decisions and a little selfish. Tristan sees her as completely selfless, but I have to disagree. She even says something along the lines of, "If I loved him a little less then I could tell him the truth. But I love him too much for him to think of me differently." WTF IS THAT? Tristan I actually liked a lot...sometimes. He had anger issues and issues controlling himself, which makes him extremely relatable. However, I feel like towards the middle of the novel he does a complete turnaround. Sure, he still got mad easily, but it was like he completely changed and I didn't really like it. He became sweet and loving and responsible, and even though he was holding in a huge secret (kind of), he was still pretty darn near perfect, which in literature is pretty annoying.

Crave was a decent read. If you're looking for something that is mostly romance, I recommend this. The ending was left wide open - like WIDE FREAKING OPEN - and it would be impossible for me to not pick up the sequel.

  • Secondary characters. I'm sorry, but they were my favorite. They made me laugh so hard. Like Emily and Anne and Nanna. They were all really great with distinct personalities.
  • The backstory. I loved the history with the Clann and the witches. I loved the story behind Savannah's parents' relationship. I was more interested in that stuff than the main story.

Savor by Megan Duncan (Blog tour: Review + Giveaway)

Savor (Warm Delicacy #1) by Megan Duncan
Genre: YA paranormal - Publisher: Self-Published - Publication Date: October 1, 2011 - Format: Paperback - Pages: 364 - Source: Author

When Claire Miller turned eighteen all she wanted to do was celebrate her birthday, but after a night on the town with her best friend she awakes to a visitor she never expected. The rulers of her region, a vampire royal family, have chosen her to be turned as their new heir and vampire princess. Claire quickly discovers the royal family is not what they seem and that she has secrets in her past, she never knew existed. (Goodreads.com)

Megan Duncan created a brilliant piece of work here. A combination of a unique and interesting plot, fun characters, and an intriguing world create an enthralling read for every paranormal lover out there.

When I first began blogging, Megan sent me an eCopy of her debut, Released. It was the first self-published book I had ever read. I absolutely adored it. When she told me she was writing a vampire book and asked me to be a part of the tour, I jumped on the opportunity.I'm beyond thrilled that I did. Megan's skills in this book surpassed those that she displayed in her first book, and my expectations for this read were exceeded.

First, the world. That was the very first thing that drew me in. It was almost dystopian-like. Vampires ruled as King and Queen. Okay, okay, that's pretty neat, right? But it gets better. They don't feed off of humans, but they also don't feed off of animals. All the vampires ask is that humans donate some of their blood and in return they receive tons of protection. Throughout the novel, quite a few questions arose for me. Right when I didn't think they'd ever be fully answered, they are. And with a surprising twist. Then you realize you are left in the dark on purpose and when you finally come into the light, it carries one hell of a punch.

Then there are the characters. Claire tries to be positive and tough, but she gets angry fairly easily. She wants approval and to be important, but then she realizes that those things aren't really all that they are cracked up to be. She misses her best friend and her mom. but tries really hard to adjust to the vampire ways. Claire is an extremely relatable and likable character. She has to make a lot of tough decisions and those are what majorly helped me connect to her. And the boys! I thought I LOVED Dmitry and that I would for sure be on his Team. However, when Arrick makes his first REAL appearance I can't help but root for him and begin to wonder if Dmitry is really who he says he is and if he really cares about Claire. My favorite, though, would have to be Robin. She's fun and energetic and adorable and a nerd! Definitely someone I hope to see more of in the next book.

I'll admit, the beginning of the book was a little slow, but it really picks up towards the middle! I couldn't stop flipping the pages. Seriously. And then when I thought I had everything figured out....BAM. BOMB. DROPPED.

This book was highly enjoyable and I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel!

  • Fight scene. Seriously, Miss Duncan knows how to create an EPIC fight scene. I was all like, "Claire's gonna win. No, wait! Bag guy's gonna win! No! Claire. Wait....the bad guy is at it again." It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.
  • The cover. Is it not beautiful? And so fitting. I love the blood puring down the side. And the beautiful texture in the background. It's sort of elegant and mysterious.

Trailer Time + Cover Gush

TRAILER TIME
(Unfortunately, I don't have a banner for this yet.)

You've probably heard of the book Matched by Ally Condie. If you haven't then I'm pretty sure this is your first time ever seeing a book blog. Ever. However, I get the feeling most of you have heard of it and read it.

I honestly wasn't that big a fan of it. Here's my review! (But be warned, it was one of the first books I ever reviewed.) The ending, though, left me wanting more and desperately waiting to find out what happens next.

The sequel, Crossed, is going to be released on November 1, 2011. And when I saw this book trailer, I died. It is SO beautiful, and it definitely makes me want the sequel more!

Unfortunately, I could only get you a link. But take the time to click on it, I swear it is worth it!

Meet the cover of Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake. This is the sequel to Anna Dressed in Blood. A book that I have not read, but have been wanting to read FOREVER and have heard awesome things about.

I love this cover so much. I'm pretty sure I liked ADiB better, but I still love this one. Does it not look...epic!?

What do you think? Are you excited for Crossed? Are you team Xander or Ky?

And what about Girl of Nightmares cover. Do you like it more or less than the first one?

Blood's Voice by Aine Massie (Blog Tour: Interview)

BookBreather: Hello Miss Massie! So glad to have you on the blog today and to be a part of this tour!

Aine: Glad to be here, Gabbi.
BB: I'm going to start by asking questions about YOU!

BB: First of all, when did you realize that writing was your thing? How did you come to this glorious revelation?

A: I never had that ‘Ah-Ha’ moment I hear about. I’ve written since I was little, for school, club, emotional release, etc. A couple of years ago I had an idea that I was actually going to use for a character in a RPG game with my hubby and some friends but with some encouragement and a bit of badgering, lol, I wrote out the character and began writing about her and her reality.

BB: What's one thing that not a lot of people know about you?

A: That I’m a pesca-vegetarian :D but don’t worry, it’s that I literally can’t eat meat so I won’t fuss if you have that nice plate of beef tips with mushrooms and onion ;)

BB: Be honest, what is your guilty pleasure?

A: Christmas cartoons, lol. I love Charlie Brown, Rudolf, the Misfit Toys, Frosty, et all. And no, it’s not on just for the kids, shhhh....

BB: Lol, I loveee those!!

BB: Do you have a writing must-have (Ex: coffee, music, Doritos, etc...)?
A: Music, laptop (not doing this by hand, nope!), and a comfy spot to sit.

BB: What is the one thing you could not live without?
A: My kids!

BB: Tehehe, I'm sure they'd approve :D

BB: What were some of your favorite books growing up?

A: It changed a lot. When I was really little I remember loving the Cat in the Hat but later on it would have been a toss up of my E A Poe collection, Shakespeare Collection, or Interview with a Vampire. I know... weird combo there.

BB: OKAY, SPEED ROUND!
BB: Favorite breakfast food?
A: Onion bagels with cream cheese.

BB: Zombies or werewolves?

A:Werewolves.

BB:Travel by airplane or car?

A: Car. (I hate flying *shudders*)

BB: Favorite color?

A: Blue, Green, Purple – in that order.
BB: Okay, now...time for the book!

BB: Describe Blood's Voice in five words.
A: Harrowing yet romantic vampire story.

BB: *Nods in agreement!*

BB: How long did it take you to write Blood's Voice?
A: The better part of 2 years. I didn’t write nonstop but still, overall about 2.

BB: Were you nervous about releasing it, considering all of the vampire books that are already on the market?
A: Very! I wasn’t nervous about the others on the market, just about if mine would be enjoyable to others. I love my characters and enjoy writing about them.

BB:Who was the most fun character to write?
A: Fun to write... hum... Not really sure. Declan was great. He’s so laid back yet sweetly stubborn. Nic was fun too. I think the most energetic/fun even though not focused on a lot would be Skye though.

BB: LOL! Skye was quite the character!

BB: Are any of the characters based off of real people?
A: Yes and no. There is no one character that is “him” or “her” but there are parts of characters that are friends or family. Everything from the word ‘parentals’ to two of the characters in the sequel being based off one person. I tried to make each special which it turns out means each carries at least one characteristic of someone I care about.

BB: What was your favorite part about writing BV?
A: The first triad scene. It wasn’t planned, btw. I was writing and while I had intended for Nic to be there when Dec pounced, it was all Dec’s doing to do more...

BB: Oh gosh. I certainly remember that scene. It was shocking, to say the least. And hott!

BB: What is the best thing you learned while writing BV?

A: That I need to trust my muse more than my outline ideas. I tried to force ideas into certain paths and WOW that was a bad idea.
BB: Now, one last question for the lovely readers. Where can we find you and your book online?

Blood's Voice by Aine Massie (Blog Tour: Review)

Blood's Voice (House Millar, #1) by Aine Massie
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy - Publication Date: June 1, 2011 - Publisher: Geas Publishing - Format: eBook - Pages: 400 - Source: Received from author for blog tour

Anya Millar had no memory of her life or an instruction manual on how to navigate the insane world of humans, biting, and reality. Instead, Anya has had to learn to navigate the world of love, life, and sanity while avoiding those that would see her dead or enslaved.

This is the ongoing journey of Anya and Nicholas, human loving vampires and the human they love, Declán. What makes it all more complicated is that they are abominations in their own world and Declán is a natural born vampire hunter called a Guardian.

Anya must come to terms with who she is and her missing past, Nicholas must win back the object of his eternal love while dealing with new cravings in his silent heart, and Declán must learn to destroy the very creatures that he has unequivocally given his heart and blood. (Goodreads.com)

After the first few pages of this book, my guard was up. There's a surplus of technical errors made in the writing style. Lack of commas, sentences phrased incorrectly...things like that. Not being one to quit so easily, I continued on with great trepidation.

I was really glad that I did! The technical errors continue throughout the story, but for me it was sort of easy to overlook because I was engrossed in a fabulous story and a steamy romance. I'll admit that there were a few quotes and events that reminded me of Twilight, and I swear I am not just saying that because this is a vampire book. But those parts felt a lot more believable than Twilight.

There is a love triangle of sorts, but it is unlike any I have ever read. Seriously, it was sexy! And shocking, in the possible way. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say...WOW to this triangle.

The characters were a lot of fun, too. There is a lot of stiff and formal dialogue, and in Anya and the other vampires it worked pretty well, but on some of the other characters it felt wrong. However, that is another thing it is easy to look past, because the characters all have really special qualities about them that made me love them. Anya was a total worry-wart, but her naivety was cute and funny. Declan was sweet and extremely brave. Nicholas was so sweet, but he kept popping up all over the place and annoying me. My favorite was Skye. She was cute and always good for a laugh.

The plot was unique and actually quite stunning! It progressed quite naturally with a nice rise and fall of action and romance.

All in all, this is a book that would appeal to vampire fans everywhere. If you're looking for something with spice and originality, I'd advise you turn to Blood's Voice.

  • Consistency. One really special thing about Anya is that her voice contains the power of persuasion, and that is definitely something that kept popping up and causing problems.
  • The mystery. There is definitely an air of mystery to this book. Anya has to re-meet friends and enemies alike, considering she has a severe case of amnesia. When she meets these people, we're not really sure if they are who they say they are, or if they are actually dangerous.
  • The world. I feel like the world of vampires that Aine Massie built has a lot of original qualities to it, and it is very in depth!
